More bad news

After giving Nathan a day off on Sunday, Monday was no better.  In the morning, it was clear he could not walk at all.  I had an appointment with the vet who does his acupuncture on Tuesday, so I gave him another day to rest.

By Tuesday, he was very agitated and still could not walk.   When the vet examined him on Tuesday, he agreed it was not good.   Of course, the only way to know for sure if it was yet another disk would be to do an MRI.  But, my husband and I agree we would not put Nathan through a 3rd surgery in 1 1/2 yrs. So, there really was no upside to doing an MRI.  We would treat him as if it were a disk issue.  It is possible that it is a very bad pulled muscle, but even today, Nathan is unable to stand.

It's clear Nathan's back is just a house of cards.  He's now taking his Double P, prednisone and valium.  He had acupuncture yesterday and today to try to give him some additional relief.

It's going to be a long week, waiting to see if he can get any better.   I'm heart-broken.

  2. We'll keep on sending prayers for Nathan. His condition reminds me so much of our Doxie, Bart, who was with us from 1990 until 2003. Between 1997 and 2000 Bart had to have 4 back surgeries. After the last surgery the vet was sure Bart would never walk again. But he surprised everyone and was walking and going potty by himself within 10 days after the surgery. The vet always referred to Bart as his miracle dog and would always call us to come in whenever a patient came in with similar back problems to show the owner that recovery was possible.

We'll keep rooting for your little Nathan.

    1. I don't know how you did it 4 times! After Nathan's 2nd surgery in March, we said we'd never do it again. Bart definitely must have been a miracle dog!

  3. I am so sorry you are going thru this yet again. I will be praying for Nathan and your family. Nathan and Cher are just such fragile little beings. They lift us so high, and bring us so much joy. When they are hurt, it pains us as much as them i think. I'm sure many tears have been shed at our homes.
Cher is also on prednisone and tramadol again. She quite walking after a routine needle urine sample was taken by the vet. She is doing better today and like Nathan only time will tell.
My hubby and I agreed when Cher had her first surgery that we not do another one. We agreed that if it was crate rest and meds we would try it but as you know surgery is so hard on them. I will be thinking of Nathan. Please keep us posted on his progress. Sending Rays
